خلاصه : World-wide increasing demands for energy and enormous use of fossil fuels cause a significant reduction in non-renewable energy resources and harmful environmental pollutions. Therefore, energy saving has received increasing attention in recent years. More than 60% of industrial electrical energy is consumed by induction motors. Therefore, using high efficiency permanent magnet motors instead of induction motors results in a substantial saving in energy resources. Adding a squirrel cage to the rotor of permanent magnet motors makes them capable of line-starting. Line-start permanent magnet synchronous (LSPM) motors are appropriate candidate for single speed applications. In this research, the advantages and challenges associated with LSPMS motors and their applications are discussed. It is shown that, the main barriers against widespread commercializing of LSPMS motors are their start-up and synchronization problems which can be overcome by proper design of their characteristics. For this purpose, electrical and magnetic models of the LSPMS motors are presented and used for a comprehensive analysis of different stages in their starting behavior. Starting problems of LSPMS motors is then classified into two categories i.e. start-up failure and synchronization failure. Also, a feature associated with start-up of LSPMS motors, so-called critical torque, is introduced and calculated based on the analytical model of the motor. The effect of magnetizing inductance on the motor start-up and synchronization capabilities which has receives less attention in the literatures is investigated. Afterwards, the accuracy of present synchronization capability method is improved and confirmed by dynamic simulations and experimental results. In contrast to previous researches, a wider range of load torque is considered by using a quadratic load torque function. The design of motor with the aim of converting an induction motor to a line-start permanent magnet motor by changing only the rotor of original motor is presented. An appropriate procedure including analytical model, magnetic equivalent model and also finite element model of the motor is proposed. Different designs are then presented considering the manufacturing limitations. Based on the proposed designs, a prototype is constructed and tits steady state performance is compared with the one of an induction motor in a wide range of load torques. Optimal rotor resistance for the improved start-up performance is then calculated analytically and it is confirmed by dynamic simulations and experiments. Two indices are proposed for assessment of start-up and synchronization capabilities of LSPMS motors to be used in optimization procedures. Finally, a new algorithm is proposed for time efficient multiobjective-optimization of LSPMS motors considering start-up and synchronization indices as well as motors efficiency and power factor. The proposed algorithm is applied to a LSPMS motor to find optimal values of magnet flux and rotor resistance.
